Chapter Thirty-Four: Young Reinhardt’s Blunder (Part II)
“I didn’t hear you very well. Could you repeat what you said?”
The first voice heard belonged to Annelier’s.
She seemed pretty irritated.
The wind spirit, who could hear voices and sounds from a distance, was still limited in how far he could reach.
Since he usually stayed in the Royal Palace, there was no one who could discuss their misdeeds, even within the vicinity.
There was always the fear of it falling to the wrong ears.
That’s why the majority of the nasty exchanges between people were made through writing.
It was their countermeasure against Vint.
Since proving otherwise would be difficult.
There were even times when he’d wander around places other than the Royal Palace on a whim, something even evil doers would have a hard time tracking.
Vint didn’t necessarily reveal evildoings out of his sense of justice. Still, he’d done so many times just to amuse himself, going as far as to deliver secret conversations between two parties to those they didn’t want to know the most.
“I received mercy from His Highness…”
The other voice was Mia’s.
It was already to be expected. However, I’m curious as to how they ended up that way.
I wondered how the conversation started.
If Mia had started it, then I’ll have to put her place.
If it were Annelier, then the scolding would be Busterman’s job.
It was necessary to make them understand that the one who’d become queen would have her top priority be continuing the blood running through the king’s veins.
Negligence in doing so will lead to all sorts of tragedies.
The Royal family’s blood had never run dry, but a king with multiple partners had perpetually been not without a tragedy.
This situation tended to occur whenever multiple princes were born between several women.
There was silence for a while after Mia spoke.
Vint can, at the very least, identify their location. However, he does not know anything else aside from the sounds they made.
So, it was the same for me, who was eavesdropping through Vint’s power.
Both of us had no idea with regard to the circumstances under which they were speaking.
Well… It didn’t sound like there were doing anything else but staying still, so there shouldn’t be any bloodshed.
“His Highness was kind to me.”
The silence was followed by Mia’s voice.
Vint turned around and looked at me.
“Ehhh… Really?”
How rude.
“What are you suspecting me of?”
“After all, you’re the Reinhardt, right?”
How unbelievably rude.
“I’m nice to all women.”
“You mean because it’s coming from her, right? Could she really be talking about the Reinhardt?”
“Who else but me?”
I was about to say a follow-up, but then I closed my mouth.
There was another person whom people called His Highness.
Prince Barnabas from the allied country Barzal was also studying here.
I was aware that Mia had been trying to look good in front of that man just until the other day.
Right now, since she only said the honorific His Highness, there existed the possibility that he was referring to another guy.
But even if that were the case, there was no point in correcting anyone should Annelier be misunderstanding what she was saying.
As I thought, there was no point.
“…What were you thinking about?”
“I was thinking about the possibility that it wasn’t me who was being kind to Mia.”
“Wha…”
With an indescribable expression on his face, Vint groaned helplessly.
“Uhm, well, there is always that possibility with her.”
“There is also the probability that it is not. Therefore, there’s no point in corrective whatever Annelier is thinking.”
Sometimes, I found it perplexing—to understand the tension between women, but Mia wasn’t one to do something that didn’t make much sense.
“Who did you think she was referring to?”
“Prince Barnabas.”
“Ah, Annelier doesn’t have much to do with him.”
As he said that, Vint twisted his neck.
“Uhm, who was Annelier’s childhood friend again? Was his name Wolf?”
“Ah, there’s also a possibility that it’s him.”
…Was it really possible?
“Since he’s the eldest son of the ducal family, he’s also called His Highness.”
“Right, that’s right.”
“It’s possible. Really possible, but…”
It’s too late now, but what was the point of threatening me into getting another woman, just to inform me that said person might be sleeping with another man…?
“Ah…”
Vint seemed to have noticed the dubiousness of the situation as well.
I’ve decided on the political marriage with Annelier while choosing Mia for the purpose of having a child. Still, if the conversation were about another man, then I would be living too much like a fool.
“Let’s not investigate this any further.”
“…I personally think that Reinhardt is a good man! He just has a very peculiar taste in the bedroom!”
“It’s true that I’ve already slept with Mia, though. Was Vint listening in on us?”
“No… I don’t have a hobby of peeping in on people like that…”
I have no idea what Vint may have heard or what he didn’t, but I had assumed that Vint was actively making sure things were going smoothly as his purpose was the continuation of the Cress Royal Family bloodline.
It seems that wasn’t the case.
“I don’t mind if you do it before me since I won’t be listening anyway. There are just times when it reaches me… But I’m not interested in other people’s bedroom manners.”
Vint leaned against the windowsill, turned completely towards me, with his lips pursed.
“It’s not like I hurt women. After all, I’m a gentle person, aren’t I?”
“No, I don’t think that you like to hurt them. Though I don’t think that changes your sadistic tendencies.”
“I’m not going to deny any of that. Still, if you think that Mia’s an unassuming woman, then that’s fine. By the way… Was the conversation interrupted? Did you stop drawing in the sound, or did they just finish talking?”
After Mia’s voice earlier, the conversation abruptly stopped.
It was half-hearted, or rather, an anticlimactic finish.
Whether it was Annelier or Mia, it was hard to say to point out who was the hypocrite—a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
I thought they’d be harsher towards each other if there weren’t eyes on them.
“Hmmm…?”
Vint leaned out of the window.
“It doesn’t seem like their locations have changed, so I think they’re still in the same place as before.”
“What’re they doing in that silence?”
“Are they just staring at each other?”
“…”
I don’t understand women.
